Stanley Black & Decker working on sustainable IoT connectivity with Ericsson and T-Mobile

Ericsson, T-Mobile Austria and Stanley Black & Decker have announced their collaboration on innovative IoT solutions for connected equipment and services.

By making use of T-Mobile Austria’s network, Ericsson IoT Accelerator for global connectivity, and Stanley Black & Decker’s digital accelerator, all the three partners are trying to simplify and boost the global deployment of Stanley Black and Decker’s connected equipment and services.

“Accelerating digital transformation and sustainability is a critical outcome we can deliver by partnering with T-Mobile Austria and Stanley Black & Decker,” said Kiva Allgood, head of IoT at Ericsson. “Leveraging Ericsson IoT Accelerator, a dedicated IoT network, it is possible to promote sustainable agriculture and contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”

Ericsson’s Mobility Report, released in November, had predicted that global 5G subscriptions will exceed 2.6 billion within the next six years and, by that time, 5G will cover 65% of the world. Ericsson also forecast that total mobile subscriptions, including to previous generation networks, will reach 8.9bn from 8bn over the next six years. More than a quarter of the global subscriptions will be 5G by 2025 and will account for approximately 45% of worldwide mobile data traffic.

A month earlier, Ericsson had also announced its collaboration with NVIDIA to develop technologies that will enable communication service providers to build virtualised 5G radio access networks (RAN), that will boost the introduction of new AI and IoT-based services. In September, Ericsson announced the successful completion of a new 5G milestone in its lab together with Qualcomm. While conducting the testing, commercial Ericsson Radio System base stations, along with Ericsson standalone New Radio (NR) software and Ericsson’s 5G Cloud Core solution were used with a mobile smartphone form-factor test device that was powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System.
